Shockwave Therapy
Shock waves have many applications in medicine today. Originally used to break up kidney stones, they’re now used in orthopedic pain therapy, or sport injuries, among other conditions.
Used to stimulate the body’s natural healing power by powering regenerative actions at the cellular level, this advanced, cutting-edge technology is now part of the treatments used by Olympic team doctors. We’re proud to offer it to our patients and the community as well!
How Does It Work?
Shock waves are sound waves, high-pressure acoustic pulses that temporarily transmit energy from the generation point to other areas. Originally used in the 1980s, the treatment was used to disintegrate kidney and gallstones, without damaging the surrounding tissue. As a non-surgical alternative therapy, it resulted in increased blood circulation and enhanced metabolic activity, jump-starting the healing process.
A variety of biological reactions may result from using shockwave therapy:
- Increases cell permeability
- Stimulates circulation of blood and lymph
- Releases nitric oxide, leading to vasodilation, increased metabolic activity, & angiogenesis (forming new blood vessels)
- Has an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect
- Releases growth hormones
- Stimulates stem cells and nerves
We have three different devices that help with the treatment:
- Radial shockwaves: helps with superficial adhesions in muscles and tissue. Their maximum intensity is at the skin’s surface. Works to treat issues in the musculoskeletal system, like tendons, fascia, ligaments, and muscles.
- Focused shockwave: a highly advanced type of shockwave that varies the depth of penetration to treat deeper issues. It helps initiate healing, and also helps with tissue repair, by stimulating the proliferation of the patients’ own stem cells.
- Magnetotransduction: a therapy that uses EMTT (extracorporeal high-frequency magnetic-field therapy), magnetic pulsations that reduce inflammation, and help new cells get stronger and last longer. It’s a non-invasive procedure specifically created for the treatment of musculoskeletal problems.
Ensuring our patients experience a change in their physical well-being is important to our team. With this treatment, using multiple devices for the same price, our patients get a complete high-end treatment, for an affordable amount.
Similar to an ultrasound procedure, Dr. Murphy applies a conductive gel over the area in question to ensure good transmission. The patient only feels the vibration where damaged tissue is, which allows us to be very specific regarding the diagnosis and treatment.
Shockwave therapy sessions are brief, usually 10-20 minutes. The level of energy used is never above your tolerance level. Most patients experience few, if any, side effects. In areas close to a bone or extremely inflamed, some pain may be felt briefly until the device is moved from the area.
